Course Content

Experiments with various automotive systems: Steering and Suspension, Different Brakes, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Automatic Transmission, Injection and Ignition.

Experiments with various engine systems: different types of diesel engines, petrol engines.

1.Antilock Brake System(ABS)Explanation of concepts of wheel slip, wheel lock, construction and function details of ABS in road vehicles. Hands on training on ABS simulator and fault diagnostics.
2.Drum and Disc BrakesExplanation of the constructions of drum and disc brakes and their relative advantages and limitations. Introduction to the various components of the automotive brake system using the brake system training module.
3.Refrigeration and Air ConditioningExplanation of concepts and principles of refrigeration and different types of air conditioning systems using the air conditioning training module.
4.Steering and SuspensionExplanation of concepts on steering geometry, McPherson strut suspension, antiroll bar and power steering assembly using the steering and suspension training module.
5.Automatic TransmissionPrinciples and merits of planetary gear train, basic construction and functional explanation of torque converter and various valves present in an automatic gear box.
6.Injection and Ignition SystemExplanation of types, construction, principles of injection and ignition systems in conventional and modern vehicles. Hands on training on the injection and distributor less ignition system modules.

1. Kirloskar 4 stroke single cylinder diesel engine Variable Compression Ratio (VCR). In this lab the students are exposed to the construction and working principles of various types of engines. They perform experiments on the instrumented engine test setups and calculate various engine performance parameters such as torque developed, indicated power, brake power, friction power, indicated thermal efficiency, brake thermal efficiency,mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, and rate of fuel consumption. They also perform an energy balance calculation to understand the magnitude of energy losses.
2. Maruthi 4 stroke multi cylinder petrol engine Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI), MORSE test can be done.
3. TATA 4 stroke multi cylinder diesel engine Direct Injection Common Rail (CRDI) and Turbo charged.
4. Bajaj 2 stroke single cylinder petrol engine Magneto ignition system, air cooled engine.
5. Bajaj 4 stroke single cylinder petrol engine Electronic ignition System and air cooled engine.
6. 2 stroke single cylinder diesel engine Direct injection engine.
