Short Term Course (STC) on Industrial Automation and Mechatronics

Introduction:

Automation is a set of technologies that results in operation of machines and systems without significant human intervention and achieves performance superior to manual operation. Mechatronics is one of the most enabling technologies in industrial automation and has become a way of thinking than a trend in technology. Application of Industrial automation, along with the power of mechatronics has revolutionized the manufacturing industry. With active participation from Industry and academia, the Indian Automation industry has seen a rapid growth in the recent years. The objective of the proposed short term course is to introduce the state-of-the-art techniques in automation and mechatronics to the practicing engineers and academicians to enable them to take up challenging assignments in the future. Theoretical aspects of automation systems and their implementation aspects will be discussed during the program.

Objectives:

The short term course at IIT Madras strives to impart adequate background on automation as well as to provide hands-on training to truly appreciate the various automation and Mechatronics related concepts. Invited talks from industry experts are planned to further enrich the course.

The course is intended for early stage researchers and teachers, including those pursuing their PhD degrees.

Due to the limited number of seats, interested people are strongly encouraged to register early. The course is an interdisciplinary program intended for various fields of engineering and research, such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, and instrumentation engineering.

Course Contents:

  • Manufacturing excellence through relevant automation.
  • Sensors and actuators in automation and selection criteria.
  • Industrial control systems,PLC programming, use of Function Blocks, Multi-tasking, Human-Machine-Interface design, SCADA
  • Introduction to Robotics – Robot classifications, work cell, applications, robots for Indian Industry
  • Mechatronics system design
  • The course includes visit to few laboratories and hands-on experiments.
