The Institute

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one of the premier institutions of national importance in higher technical education and basic & applied research. It was established in 1959 by the Government of India in collaboration with the German Government. IIT Madras is a township of about one square mile area located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. It is a residential institution with nearly 450 faculty members, 6200 students and 1000 administrative and supporting staff.
The self-contained IIT campus is located in a beautiful wooded land with flora and fauna, carved out of the Guindy National Park. The campus has about 300 species of trees and plants including native wild ones. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories. It is conveniently located at a distance of about 12 km each from airport and railway station.

Department of Engineering Design

The Institute

Department of Engineering Design was established in IIT Madras as its 16th Department with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and research. The Department launched the novel dual degree programme in Engineering Design with a view to providing the much needed leadership in this area. The first of its kind in the country, the programme constitutes a B.Tech specialisation in Engineering Design and M.Tech specilisations in Automotive Engineering and in Biomedical Design with a strong thrust on the modern practices of design.

Institute of Road Transport, Chennai

The Institute

Institute of Road Transport (IRT) was established in 1976 under the Control of Government of Tamil Nadu and has been registered as a society under the Indian Societies Registration Act 1860. The prime objective of IRT is to conduct research studies on the various issues relating to Road Transport sector with a view to improve the performance of bus transportation by updating and adopting the latest developments that are taking place around the world.
The aim of the Institute is to disseminate knowledge on various aspects of technology developments and transport management to the officers and supervisory staff of State Transport Undertakings in Tamilnadu by organizing training courses, seminars, workshops and circulation of journals.
