The Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras offers two Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programmes in cutting-edge interdisciplinary areas. Both are two-year, full-time programmes delivered through collaboration across multiple departments. Admission is based on valid GATE scores through the IIT Madras M.Tech. Admissions portal and the COAP counselling process.
M.Tech. in Electric Vehicles
About the Programme
The M.Tech. in Electric Vehicles is a flagship interdisciplinary programme anchored by the Department of Engineering Design and delivered in collaboration with multiple departments across IIT Madras. It addresses the growing national need for highly trained EV engineers who can work across the full stack — from battery systems and motors to vehicle integration and controls.
The programme builds depth from vehicle fundamentals through to specialised EV aggregates, and prepares students for both industry R&D and academic research in the eMobility space. IIT Madras has been at the forefront of EV research through its Centre for Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles (CBEEV) and a vibrant ecosystem of EV startups incubated on campus.
Career Prospects
Graduates are equipped for roles in EV product development including EV integration, vehicle aggregate engineering, communication and calibration, verification and validation, and product and portfolio planning. Both industry employment and research pathways are supported by the curriculum design.
