Centre for Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT Madras is organising a hackathon to develop a system to improve road safety. If you are an engineering student or an engineer who is concerned with improving road safety conditions in India, grab the opportunity to make a difference.
Problem Statement:
As per Ministry of Road Transport and Highways statistics it seems 84 per cent of the accidents are due to driver violating traffic rules. The challenge is to reduce crashes by alerting traffic violators and helping the enforcement agencies detect the offenders with use of technological solutions.
Develop a system using image/video analytics to detect and identify the following traffic violations:
- Over speeding
- Signal Jumping
- Riding without using safety gear (Helmet/seatbelt)
- Distracted Driving -Usage of Mobile Phone
- Rash/Reckless driving/Thrill Racing – Lane discipline
- Unauthorised Parking
- Wrong-side driving
- Driving pattern of Drunken Drivers
The system shall trigger a response for real time (within 20 seconds of occurrence) at an appropriate stand-off distance and minimal addition to road infrastructure and furniture. The solution shall be able to work on minimum resolution of 176 x 120 pixels (QCIF) available in CCTV.

The system shall clearly identify the offending vehicle by its registration. The violation may be indicated to the vehicle user and trigger a response mechanism to traffic enforcement agencies
Timeline

Concept Note submissions starts from 11 October 2022. Last date for submissions is 10 November 2022.
Screening of submissions will happen and short-listed candidates will be notified.
Selected applicants will be asked to make a presentation on their ideas during the 3rd Week of November.
During November and December, opportunities will be given to the shortlisted contestants to develop their ideas to create a proof of concept or prototype by availing lab facilities and mentoring by CoERS, IIT Madras.
The Grand Finale will be held in January 2023 and winners will have the option to work with COERS team at IIT Madras to mature their concept to a product and incubate it into a startup. There will be attractive prizes, Internships and opportunities at CoERS.
Terms and Conditions
- Submission by applicants shall be own idea/concept or shall be disqualified at any stage if found violated.
- Judgment of the jury will be final and applicants shall abide by it.
- On being shortlisted, applicants shall be deemed to agree CoERS regulations for being mentored or nurtured.
Applicants by submission are presumed to agree the above terms and conditions and any others prescribed by CoERS at any stage of the competition.
The Centre for Excellence for Road Safety (COERS)
The Centre of Excellence in Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT Madras is funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India to perform evidence-based integrated approach to Road Safety. CoERS works on various aspects of human factors engineering, road engineering and vehicle engineering to bring about significant improvements in road safety globally. This CoE also advices various stakeholders and Governments to bring about a data-driven systems approach to road safety.
