Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras is conducting their Open House on 21st September 2019 (For schedule click here). There will be several parallel events starting from 9.15 A.M to 5 P.M highlighting the research/academic profiles, startup/project profiles, infrastructure and industry connection.

Department of Engineering Design was established in 2006 as the 16th Department at IIT Madras to develop design professionals with a strong multidisciplinary background and a deep sense of aesthetics with a focus on Automotive Engineering and Biomedical Design

Industry Talks


The department curriculum provides an appropriate blend of theory and practice. The programme has been planned in conjunction with major automotive and biomedical companies right from the start. The curriculum includes a full semester internship in the industry that exposes students to the best design practices followed all over the world.

How to Reach

You can enter IIT Madras campus either through the Adyar (Main) Gate (around 3.5 km from the department) or through the Velachery Gate (0.5 km from the department). Please note that four-wheelers are allowed only through the Main Gate.


Institute buses keep running to and fro from both gates every 15 min. Get down at Bio-Tech Junction - 1 min walk to the department.
