Implementing Lean Ergonomics in Service Industry – A Case Study in Indian Postal Service

The objective of this case study is to improve the productivity through identification/elimination of waste, cellular approach, layout modifications and modifying the work design in manual sorting centre. After implementation of lean ergonomics concept, significant advantages such as, implemented housekeeping concept, colour stickers for town delivery (TD) is yellow and non- town delivery is blue to reduce the time for identification TD & Non-TD bags in an initial bag opening section and improved aesthetics of an existing layout by providing show cards inspiring quotes on cleaning. Green plant (gang way) is not only provided for separate TD & Non-TD section but also gives pleasant effect. Fixed scanner is used instead of moving scanner for reducing the shoulder pain (reduction in human effort).
